Game Review: Far Cry Primal

Introduction
Until recently the Far Cry games have been set in the present day time sequence. This time, Ubisoft – creator of different games , has decided to set the Far Cry game into the Stone Age.
It’s around 10.000 BC, a time when humankind has just began to settle into the world. In these times, it was survival of the fittest that ruled the world back then.
Story and Gameplay
It’s 10.000 BCE and humankind is on the brink of extinction. It’s the end of the Ice Age and the beginning of the Stone Age. To get higher in the food chain, humans need to find a way to conquer the elements and their surroundings and battle against predators and other animals.
In the game you take on the role of Takkar, a caveman warrior, who will do everything to keep his tribe, the Wenja, from getting attacked by the two other tribes. The Wenja, the tribe that Takkar, the main character is part of , are also known as “Soft Bloods”. They have traveled “many suns” prior to arrival at Oros. The Udam are known to be “Flesh Eaters.” This means they are cannibals, because they think it will make them stronger by doing so. The Izila are known as “Sun Walkers”. They are more of a Aztec-like tribe. They worship their High Priestess called “Batari.”
Takkar needs to find materials in the world to craft his own weaponry and he will need to conquer the other two tribes in order to save his tribe from extinction. Not only for weapons he needs to find resources, also for upgrading his village and to get more villains.
Becoming the Beast Master !
During your quests in Far Cry Primal you will encounter many predators like : wolfs, bears, hyenas, sable tooth tigers and other animals that you can tame when you have the skills.
Taming an animal is not so difficult. You just make bait ( made from meat ) and then throw it near the animal. It will come and eat from the bait and then you must slowly ( really slow ) approach the animal and then keep the button pressed that is indicated to tame the beast. Once the circle is full white, you will have tamed the animal in question.
The first animal that you will be able to tame is a white wolf. Once you have that one, you can tame other animals. For the bigger animals, you will need more skills and more experience.
Once you have the sable tooth tiger, other predators will not attack you any longer. There are up to 17 animals to tame in the game. Once you have all of them, you can move on as well. But once you have the sabretooth tiger, it will give you a lot of power to attack enemies.
Gaining experience points in the game
Every animal or enemy you kill will give you experience points. This will allow you to level up and gain skills. With those skills you can do another ability within the game.
Healing yourself and your beasts
When you get hurt in the game there’s a little health bar under the mini-map. When it gets low you are in danger of dying. To help this you can heal yourself by pressing the assigned button or keystroke. You will see Takkar either eat a piece of meat or stretch his fingers or getting an arrow out of his arm. This will get your health bar full again.
Besides that, when you have tamed animals, you can heal them too, by giving them a piece of meat. It will restore their health as well. You can also pet your animal to make it happy again.
Day and Night Cycle
There is a Day and Night sequence in the game. When you choose to sleep, it will ask you till when you want to sleep : until the sun comes up again or when the sun goes down again.
At night, some predators will be more aggressive then when they are in daytime. Be aware of this fact when hunting down animals! This fact makes it harder for Takkar to hunt animals during night time.
Graphical detail and open world
The graphics of the game are really amazingly realistic. In fact, the whole world is so realistic that you wonder how they could actually recreate it for this game.
It’s a open world, which means you can walk around it and do what you want to do in it.
Oros, the land of The Stone Age
The land you will need to survive in this game is called Oros. It was in the central of Europe and it’s the first time that people will fight for land. Mankind was not necessarily at the top of the food chain and had to fight for survival.
The land of Oros is a vast land in which many animals live. But not only animals live in this land, also two other tribes do. All of the three tribes are going to have to fight for their land and claim it for themselves.
Since Takkar is the Beast Master, he is able to tame animals in the game and use them in advantage for fighting animals and the other tribes. You, the player, will need to play as Takkar and survive in the world of Oros.

Conclusion
Far Cry Primal is the most realistic game that I have ever experienced. This is a survival game and it shows, because you can’t just “buy” your weapons, no you need to craft them yourself. This means you need to find the resources in the world itself : wood, slate and other materials can be found in Oros. But you can find plants as well, that you can collect.
Bonfires are places that you can claim to easily travel from one point in the game to another point in the game. This is a good way of fast traveling.
The graphics of the game are amazingly realistic. You are directly thrown into the story and the game itself.
If you are looking for a great game and your laptop or desktop can run the game, buy this game, it’s absolutely worth it !

Game Review: Tom Clancy’s "The Division"

By Wesley Regenbogen
Introduction
Back in 2001 an operation known as “Dark Winter” was launched as a real world exercise that tested emergency response to a bioterror attack on the United States of America. In this exercise they tested how long it would take emergency workers to respond to a possible bioterror attack.

Game plot
The game “Tom Clancy’s : The Division” ( from now on we will refer to it as “The Division” ) is a third person shooter set in the present New York. Terrorists have released a pandemic-causing virus on the dollar bills on Black Friday and soon afterwards smallpox virus is infecting the people. Many people died from the virus and Central Park in New York has become a mass burial place. The government can’t handle the situation when groups of scavengers take over the streets.
When everything else fails, there’s a group of highly trained civilians called The Strategic Homeland Division" (SHD)”, also referred to as “The Division.” These agents are only called upon when everything else has failed. Which is the case in the game.
After a short intro cinematic ( embedded below ), the player is directly thrown into the game itself. When the player closes a door of a car nearby, the player is able to customize his character in the game and after that is done, the game starts.
First, the player needs to do a tutorial and a few missions. When the player arrives in Manhattan, this is where the game really starts.

In Search of Green Poison to fight the Green flu
Green Poison was the substance responsible for the virus outbreak in New York. People got what they call the “Green Flu.” The player needs to find the source of the outbreak and then a vaccine can be created to cure the smallpox virus. Division agents are now on the streets and they are trying to get the situation under control. Question remains … Will they succeed in their goal and find the source of the virus ?

The Division Agents
Agents of The Division are a classified unity of highly trained, self-supported tactical agents. Their main objective is to restore the order in New York city and ensure that the government can continue their work and stabilize the situation at hand. Division agents are called upon when everything else has failed. They are “activated,” once the President of the U.S. signs Directive 51, which itself is activated when disaster strikes and the situation is serious.

Dark Zone : Quarantine zone where the virus hit the hardest, PvP arena

The “Dark Zone” is the zone on the map where the virus has hit the hardest and a virus shield is needed to enter this area. Players can either choose to group together and work together or they can choose to be a solo gamer and kill other players. When a player kills another player in the Dark Zone, he/she is considered as a “Rogue Agent”.

Enemies in the game ( more info, watch the Enemies Factions video listed below )
  1. Rioters
Rioters are a group of common thug and criminals that just want to rob and kill others for the sake of survival or just for enjoyment.
  1. Rikers
The Rikers are escaped convicts from Rikers Island. They come from different gangs. Their motto is “power by numbers.”
  1. Cleaners
The Cleaners are former sanitation workers (garbage men, janitors, custodians, ect … ). They believe that the virus can be destroyed by fire, so they burn everything down. Unfortunately, this includes civilians, and you.
  1. Last Man Battalion
Also known as LMB, these group of enemies are member of a private military company. They want to create a new world order by force.

Gameplay aspects of the game
When you select a mission, you need to follow the GPS orange line towards your destination. Beware that during your walk or run towards your mission, you can encounter scavengers and crooks that want to shoot at you. You will need to kill them first, before you move on towards your mission. Hint : Keep an eye on your mini-map! This will make you aware of enemy presence with your area where you are in.
On your backpack you will see how many items you have currently in your inventory and also will see which abilities that you have enabled. When you get hit, you will not see a health bar or something else, but you will see that your screen gets red, this indicates that you are hit and need to seek cover to avoid getting killed in action. Your health will regenerate when you have found coverage behind something.
When your enemies throw a smoke bomb or a fire bomb towards you, you will see a red area where it will hit, if you are in this area, get out of it asap. With some weaponry that you have, you can get a over-shoulder view when aiming at the enemies. This is not with every weapon, but with only a few. A so-called “sticky bomb” is a bomb that you throw on enemies and can explode, this certainly attracts their attention and you can shoot down your enemies after it.
Another cool thing is the map. When you open the map, your character is standing “in” the map as it is a holographical map.

Looting
When you kill an enemy, you are able to loot their weapons, clothing and anything else that they might be carrying with them. In the “Dark Zone” this loot will be something with more value. In the normal game it just is a “reward” that you get for killing the enemy.

Personal opinion about Tom Clancy’s : The Division
If you are looking for a shooter game that involves realism and very high detailed graphics, then THIS is the game you are looking for. The very high graphics and realism makes this game as realistic as it gets. There might be a few glitches and crashes, but overall this game has elevated my expectations and clearly the developers of the game, Ubisoft, have succeeded in making this a top game.
You can play this game on your own, but when you look for other players, you can play it in co-op and you can complete missions together. The gameplay of the game is fluent and you can get to cover everywhere in the game, so that enemies have lesser chance of hitting you.
The “Dark Zone” I haven’t reached yet, but eventually I will get to that as I progress in the game.
This is definitely a game that you need to buy, if you haven’t bought it yet, get to your local game store and get it !

Second Life vs. Entropia

By Wesley Regenbogen

Introduction
Second Life and Entropia Universe are both virtual worlds, but they are not similar to each other. In this article I will review both of these worlds and explain what the differences are and which similarities they have and what makes them special.
Second Life ( SL )
Introduction to Second Life
Second Life is a virtual world where avatars can walk around and teleport to different places in-world. You can download the client software at http://www.secondlife.com, but there are alternative viewers available as well.
Your first steps into Second Life
When you first sign up with Second Life you can choose from different types of default avatars and choose a name for your avatar. After your avatar has been created, you download the viewer of your choice and then login with your username and password.
You will first arrive at Learning Island, where the basics of Second Life are explained. This is the place where all new avatars arrive in the Second Life environment. After finishing the tutorial is a teleport to Social Island, though I suggest instead heading to  NCI ( New Citizens Inc ) at Kuula.
There is a real life cash economy in Second Life, where you can buy Linden Dollars ( L$ ) and you can also convert your L$ into USD or any other currency. You can also earn L$ by doing a virtual job in Second Life ( I’ll explain this later on in the article, so keep on reading, please ).
In Second Life you don’t really have game elements that are placed within the virtual world, at least not in most places. You can find games to play in Second Life.
The places you visit in Second Life are known as “sims” (short for simulations)
Account types in Second Life :
There are two account types in Second Life, Basic, or free accounts, and Premium, or accounts of which one pays a fee on a regular basis to Second Life's owner Linden Lab.
Earning L$ in Second Life or getting a Premium account for real life money
To earn L$ in Second Life, you can do a virtual job, like me as a virtual journalist for Second Life Newser. Or you can find another virtual job that suits you, of course, such as DJ or content creator. It all depends on your real life skills or interests. To own or buy land you need a Premium account, which costs real life money, such as buying L$ as well. What makes Second Life unique is that it has numerous shops and stores and also many clubs and live concerts in Second Life.

    Second Life Marketplace website

The Second Life Marketplace ( http://marketplace.secondlife.com ) is a website designed to buy items from when you are not in-world. You have to login with your username and password to fully access this website and buy items from the website for your avatar.

    Entropia Universe ( EU )

    Introduction to Entropia Universe

Entropia Universe is a virtual world/game, which takes place in the future and you are being dropped as a colonist on the planet that you choose to start on. There are six different planets and space in Entropia Universe. Each planet has its own properties and creatures. When you first sign up for an Entropia account, you need to choose on which planet you want to start. I chose Planet Calypso, and I did the tutorial there in Thule, the starting place. From there, I went to Port Atlantis where my adventure started.

Graphical details in Entropia Universe vs Second Life

The company behind Entropia Universe, MindArk, was behind all of Entropia's creation. The graphics are amazingly detailed and when you run into bushes, the bushes move when you run through them. Very high detail graphics are everywhere.

With Second Life on the other hand, the graphics are not that detailed. That is because Entropia Universe uses the CryTek gaming engine, which is used in the Crysis game series and a few other games as well. In Second Life, the Havoc physics engine is used.

Teleporting in Entropia Universe vs teleporting in Second Life

Teleporting is also done in another fashion then in Second Life. In Second Life you have “landmarks” that you can use to teleport to another place. Or you can be invited to teleport to a friend’s place in Second Life. In Entropia Universe you need to go to a “teleporter” machine to be able to teleport to another place. Unless you find a vehicle or an helicopter that can take you there, for PED of course.
Another difference between Second Life and Entropia Universe, is that your avatar makes a moving motion when you walk around in Entropia Universe. In Second Life your avatar seems to”float” above the surface. In Entropia Universe you can push the “R” key on your keyboard and your avatar will auto-run.

Another difference between Second Life and Entropia Universe is that your avatar can get “killed” by creatures that attack you when you shoot them. You are automatically teleported to the nearest so-called “revival point.” It’s basically a terminal where you are teleported to. Your health bar will slowly fill back up after a long while.

    Terminals in Entropia Universe

Speaking of terminals, here are some types of terminals you will encounter :
    • Revival Point ( see above )
    • Trade terminals ( to trade your goods for PED and also buying items from someone )
    • Society terminals ( “societies” are almost the same as “groups” in Second Life )
    • Manufacturing terminals ( these terminals are used to construct items, when you have the blueprint of it, of course and the needed items to make it )
    • Storage terminals ( these are terminals where every Entropian can store their personal items. Basically it’s your personal locker to store your personal items )
    • Auction terminals ( these terminals are like the word says to buy or sell items )
    • Repair Terminal ( to repair your items if they are damaged during an attack )
Hunting and Mining in Entropia Universe
You can hunt down the alien creatures that you encounter in-world in Entropia Universe and you can loot them and get items from them and sell them if you wish. After the tutorial, at least on Calypso, you should have some guns and ammo available to you.
Mining I've read is much more difficult to do, because it involves many more skills than hunting does. I haven’t been into mining yet, so I can’t tell you more about it.
Missions you can do and get rewards for doing them
At some camps you encounter, you can choose to do missions, like in a normal game, if you succeed in them, then you get rewards, like guns, ammo or something else.

    Conclusion :
Although Second Life and Entropia Universe are virtual worlds, they take on a different approach and a different experience. This is due to the different graphical engines, and also the “game play” is different. Don’t let that scare you off, though, because it’s a worthy experience in both places.
For a Second Life resident, Entropia takes some getting used to, so keep calm and relax. But in the end you should get used to the differences and enjoy it, trust me.

Editor's note: In the past, Entropia has made real-life news by players buying up virtual real estate for thousands of dollars, such as the sale of the Crystal Palace Space Station, for almost a third of a million US dollars in 2010. So there is potential for a few devoted players to make some cash. However, there's no shortage of ways to make dollars in Second Life, as real estate barons such as Anshe Chung have demonstrated in the past, as well as clothing, virtual pets, and other businesses.

    Dosbox

    By Wesley Regenbogen

    About DOSBOX
If you were a teenager in real life in the 90s,you probably learned to work with MS-DOS and you had a few programs and games that you liked. With the Windows environment coming out back then, the MS-DOS era was almost done and in most cases you weren’t able to run those programs and games again. The more new versions of Windows came, the less of a chance that you were able to run those programs and games. With Windows 7, 8.1 and the upcoming Windows 10 ( which will be released at the end of 2015, probably ) you don’t have a MS-DOS command-line.
But don’t be afraid, DOSBOX is a program that allows you to run these programs and games like you used to do in MS-DOS. You can download the program at http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1 and install it. The current version, at the moment of writing this, is 0.74. The installation process is painless ( meaning : easy ) and you can use it directly.
Where do you download old games to use within DOSBOX ?
So, you are probably wondering, “Ok, so you got a program to use old programs and games with? But where do I get the games from, then?”
Well, I found a good website for that. It’s called “Best Old Games.net” and you can find it at http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/. At the top of the site, you will find letters and if you click them, you get a list with games that are supported by DOSBOX. But, if you already know the game you are looking for, you can use the “search box” under the “Info” section of the site. You can also search games by category, under the “Games” section.
Should you encounter a problem, you can post it on their support forum as well, just click the “Best Old Games Support Forum” button.
Oh yes, I’m going to explain how to run and install programs and games later, but if you download games from the site, they are always in a .zip file format, you need to have a program to unzip them, like 7-Zip or WinZip or similar programs.
How to run a program or game under DOSBOX ?
So, you just downloaded a game on the website http://www.bestoldgames.net/eng/ and you downloaded the zip file and unzipped it with 7-Zip or a similar program. You need to extract it in a directory like C:\DOSGAMES or a similar directory. You can close down the unzipping program.
Then you click on the “Dosbox v0.74” icon on your desktop. The program opens up and you see a DOSBOX window appear with the “Z:\” in the command-line. You need to follow the instructions below to mount the directory you created earlier ( without the quote signs ) :
At the “Z:\” command-line you need to type the following to mount the drive and directory:
    Mount C C:\DOSGAMES”
You get this message in the command-line :
Drive C is mounted as a local directory c:\dosgames”
You can use the command “dir/p” to view the contents of the directory.
To go to the directory of the games that you downloaded earlier, you need to type in the following :
    cd [NAME OF THE DIRECTORY]”
Then you go to the directory itself.
Then you need to type the command to run the game, that’s different from game to game, of course.
Some games need to be installed first.
You then need to run the SETUP or INSTALL command to run the setup.
In my opinion, this program is very well and runs smoothly. This is a great program and the site mentioned is one of the best sites to find old games and download them.
